Allow me to share a quote and a painting by one of my favorite artists.  I love patterns and he had a way of seeing all the patterns in nature missed by us mere mortals.

" There are two types of art,  the art we do for ourselves and the art we do for others, its important never to confuse the two" - Walter Anderson

His meaning is that the art we do for ourselves is the bread and butter work required to sustain ones self, the "widgets" he called it,  its the art we do for others we put all our passion into.  Its very easy to confuse the two.
